Did I die? Nope… just actively practicing avoidance…

No, I didn’t die.  I just fell off the planet for awhile.  The Paleo planet that is.  I started my Paleo journey on September 1st.  In late October, I went to visit my mother for vacation in Las Vegas.  You’d think the debauchery of Vegas would have sucked me in and made me go back to eating junk food.  Nope… I stuck with it in Vegas.  No, it was Utah that did me in.  Damn Utah, and it’s Bumbleberry Pie. Yeah, you heard me… Bumbleberry Pie… with a scoop of vanilla ice cream no less.  A pie made from the berries of a Gigglebush… -sigh-

I was good, until I wasn’t.  I let a single indulgence, turn into two, and then ten.  And here I am on January 21st, knowing full well the insanity has to stop, yet again… I’m 39 years old and I can barely get up from my chair at work (after an extended period), off of my too-low couch or my too-low bed.  My knees just can’t take it.  Once I’m up and moving, I’m fine, it’s the getting up that’s the killer.  So, I have to get back to it… Paleo… with a vengeance.  The differences within just a month of the Paleo way of eating were nothing short of ASTONISHING to me!  I didn’t ache all over, I didn’t eat Immodium like it was candy (sorry for the TMI, but it’s the truth!), I slept better, I didn’t have the lingering congestion that had haunted me for months, overall I was feeling “normal”.  Or at least what I assume is normal for most people.  I’m actually looking forward to making the rounds to the Farmer’s Markets and farms again.  It’s time…

Fitbit Ultra and Couch Broccoli…

My lovely Mommy (yes, that’s what I call her… that’s her name!) bought me an early birthday present and left it on the guest room pillow, so I discovered it when I went to visit her on vacation last week.  It’s a Fitbit Ultra!  And yes, it’s PINK (and black).  For those unaware, I love me some dark, hot pink!  It also comes in BLUE (and black).

It’s an awesome way to track steps taken, flights of stairs climbed, as well as a way to track my sleep.  I’m a horrible sleeper AND a night owl (gasp!).  How I married an early bird, I’ll never know.

I ride a desk all week (read: desk jockey), and sit my tukus on the couch in my living room most of the weekend.  I am the poster child for the sedentary lifestyle.  I am what’s referred to as a couch potato… errr… broccoli… couch broccoli (Paleo doesn’t smile on potatoes, at least not regular ones).  As Julia Roberts so eloquently puts in in Pretty Woman:

Vivian: Yeah. Be still like vegetables. Lay like broccoli.

That’s me, I lay like broccoli.  Couch Broccoli.

I wanted the Fitbit to help kick my ASSets into gear.  Apparently, from all the things I’ve heard over the years (and read), you’re supposed to walk about 20,000 steps per day.  Do you know how far 20,000 steps is?  Do you?  I didn’t, so I looked it up.  According to Oregon State University, it is approximately 10 miles (depending on your stride). 10 MILES?  Are you kidding me?  Holy carp!  (yes, I meant to spell it that way).  I get winded walking 1 mile. And these people, the mysterious “they” everyone always refers to want me to walk 10 MILES per day?!?!  I feel like I’m winded already.  So today, for the first time I latched my little Fitbit Ultra to my pocket and have promptly forgotten about it.  Until now of course… because, DUH, I’m blogging about it.

Let’s see… I’ve walked a grand total of… TADAH!  1422 steps… hmmm… well… that’s a downer.

Steps Taken:  1422
Miles Walked:  0.62
Stairs Take:  10  (I’m not sure how this one works, because I’ve gone up and down our stairs at work twice and there’s 2 flights each way.)
Calories Burned:  1367

See… this is why I wanted the Fitbit Ultra… so I could see how little exercise I actually get.  Which in turn will make me want to go a little further each day.  I’m not insane (no comments from the peanut gallery).  I know that 20,000 steps is something I’ll have to work up to.  You don’t go from crawling to running a Spartan Race in a matter of days (unless you’re my husband – yes, HE’s insane).  Well, that and I know me.  If I go all gung-ho on this, I’ll quit before I ever really get started.

Oh, and for those wondering… I am in no way associated with Fitbit.  I wanted a pedometer and my favorite blogger Kyndra Holley, over at Peace + Love + Low Carb mentioned that she got one and was trying it out.  If you haven’t been to her blog, you have NO IDEA how much you’re missing.  She is one of the best low carb recipe mavens I’ve come across, not to mention all-around Thinspirational gal!  Have I mentioned Thinspirations before?  It’s how I label all the healthy inspirational things that I like to keep and look over to keep me motivated on my way to better health.  So you’ll hear more about it throughout my posts.

Thinspirations!
